There is a brief, but exciting time between freeze-up and the first snow, when the ice is almost thick enough to walk on and we can find small sections that froze very slowly, encouraging the growth of large crystals.This section was shaded but reflecting the blue light of the sky.Too thin yet to walk around, it is a fascinating reminder of the complexity of the freezing process.
