J-bctrip7 This is a close-up of the rock face showing the dull red iron stains, the brighter orange Xanthoria and white streaks of limestone eluted out of the rock. Limestone-rich Gneiss is relatively rare in the Shield and its presence has shielded the chain of lakes from the worst effects of acid rain and the more damaging, acid snow.. The western side of the Park has not been so fortunate.
